Its official…2011 is now in the record books. From gpawn’s quick, cursory and admittedly unscientific survey, there’s a large group of people for whom 2011 will not be missed. Honestly, I can’t blame them. It was a TOUGH year for many people. A smaller block of people reported that 2011 was…just okay…and many more people don’t really have an opinion at all about the year that has just passed.
All of these opinions are entirely okay because all of our experiences are different.
The view of 2011, from the vantage point of Glendale Pawn and Jewelry was quite interesting. We met many new friends in 2011, continued many friendships that we’ve had for a LONG time and enjoyed helping people in any way that we could. This help included quick cash for all those wonderful times when the car broke down, the kids needed to go to the doctor or any number of those delightful, “unexpected expenses”. Gpawn’s life-rule #1 is that NOTHING will ever break or need to go to the doctor if you have money in your pocket. (Even through the Internet we can hear your heads nodding in agreement…)
We also purchased a lot of items from people who no longer had a need for them. Gold, jewelry, firearms, electronics…you name it and we’ve probably bought it. We think that the poor economy was driving a lot of this, but in 2011 many people also started having some serious concerns about selling their items to strangers and many more just flat-out decided that “Yard-Sales” were just more trouble than they were worth.
2011 also inspired many people to save some serious money in their purchases and consequently, saving 30% – 60% on top quality merchandise at Glendale Pawn and Jewelry was even more popular than ever.
Something else happened in 2011 that you’re going to hear us talk about frequently in 2012. Due to the economic conditions, pawn shops suddenly became “Mainstream”. Of course “Pawn Stars” on the History channel played a part in this and we blogged about it in 2011 a few times, but gpawn is of the opinion that the mainstream acceptance of pawn shops goes quite a bit deeper than just a television show.
It has been reported to gpawn that the phenomenon known as cocktail parties is still in existence (gpawn wouldn’t know as he has become quite the hermit in his latter-years and couldn’t care less about making small talk with uninteresting people.) During the “boom years” it became common to hear people at such gatherings brag about how MUCH they paid for a particular item. In 2011 we saw a strong shift to people being proud of telling everyone how LITTLE they paid for an item. This fundamental shift in American society is not just being reported by your humble Glendale Pawn and Jewelry Blog-Scribe…it is also being reported by the mainstream print and broadcast media.
Now if you’re the social type, unlike gpawn, and you want to play the whole, “Guess how little I paid for this stunning piece of jewelry” or “Can you believe I bought this enormous, flat-screen television for THIS price?” You might want to think of Glendale Pawn and Jewelry as your own personal, thermonuclear device. Nobody…NOBODY…beats our prices.
So try and give a little wave to 2011 as it fades into the distance and try to feel a little better about hurtling into 2012. Remember that you’re not alone, we’re ALL in this together and Glendale Pawn and Jewelry is ALWAYS standing by to help in any way we can. Just as we always have for the last +25 years.
We’re glad you’re here!
