A funny thing happened on the way to the blog…

Gpawn has noticed that there’s been a lot of hype in the media these days about people not getting’ along due to their political positions, socio-economic standing, age, gender and what not. It’s pretty sad really…when you think about it. But, I guess that is just a side of human nature. Too bad it has to be that way…or does it?
Now gpawn is old enough to remember the REAL Space Program that took place during the 1960’s and 1970’s. (No disrespect to our now retired Space Shuttle Program, but in the early days of the space program it was unsure if any of our rockets would even clear the launch pad without turning into a giant ball of fire. It took some real courage just to stand next to one of these contraptions, let alone strap yourself into one.)

Oh yeah…THAT looks safe!

There was a lot of hoopla and national pride that took place during this time as it was us against the Russians in the “Race to the Moon”! Lots of good technological developments resulted from this program. Things that have enhanced our lives in many ways kind of “drifted” out of the space program and into our homes. Computers, advanced Geo-satellite positioning systems and of course…TANG! Now for those of you who are unfamiliar with TANG… (Do they even sell it anymore?) it was an awful tasting powdered orange drink that our astronauts supposedly guzzled while floating around in space. One sip of the stuff convinced a young gpawn that his future career as an astronaut was probably not going to be in the cards, if he had to drink that horrible concoction on the way to visiting interstellar planets.

Gee…I guess you can still buy it?

But as usual, I digress…

In gpawn’s humble opinion, the greatest thing that came out of the American Space Program was the revelations of the astronauts when they returned to earth. Now amidst all the pomp and patriotism that the media covered in reporting these events, if you listened really close to what our early space travelers were saying…it sounded something like this:

“Wow…from up there you can really see how we’re this lonely blue planet in a sea of darkness. When you look at the Earth you can’t see any lines dividing countries. You can’t see any politics. You can’t even tell if there is any life there or not. It REALLY makes all the petty problems of humanity appear to be quite insignificant…It makes you realize that we’re all in this together and we’re all kind of…family.”

Of course deeply philosophical comments like these don’t sell a lot of newspapers or boost a television networks Nielsen ratings so you really had to dig a bit to read and hear stuff like this…but trust me…it’s there in the record books.

I suppose this wouldn’t be a classic “Glendale Pawn and Jewelry Blog – View” post if we didn’t twist this little story a bit further…so we will.

There’s a pretty popular scientific endeavor know as Genealogy. If you haven’t heard of it, you’re not alone. Genealogy is the art and science of tracing your ancestry and finding out who exactly you’re related to. Many people discover that they are related to royalty and prominent historical figures from the past. In gpawn’s case, he found out he was related to some notorious horse thieves and con-artists…most of which lived short and scandalous lives…oh well.

Recently though, the Genealogy folks have made an important calculation/discovery. Here’s the chart they came up with:

Yup…it seems we’re all related…twice.

So if you’ve been wondering why customers of Glendale Pawn and Jewelry have been feeling like they were part of our family for over twenty-five years, now you know. Guess we were just ahead of the proverbial “Curve” in understanding that it’s important to help each other? Understanding that it’s important to respect each other and to know that we are all indeed…in this together? Actually, it’s got nothing to do with curves. It’s just who we are.

There is no other “Lonely blue planet” out there. All we have is this planet…and each other. Maybe we should all try and remember that when one of our “Brothers and Sisters” is a bit irritating?

We always close our blog posts with, “We’re glad you’re here” and this post is no different.

We are indeed…glad that you’re here.
