How much would you pay to purchase a bit of the past?
This seems to be a viable question for more and more of us these days. Sometimes, it would just be nice to see something that takes you back to a time when things were a bit different, perhaps a little simpler and definitely a bit slower paced. For some there are certain items that will trigger a memory of what may be the first of many wonderful memories. For others the triggered memory might be, “Ah yes, I remember that time…it’s amazing that I survived.”
The popularity of Vintage and Retro items for decoration or for actual, functionality has been growing for many years and here at Glendale Pawn and Jewelry we think that one of the driving forces of this popularity is to indeed, purchase a bit of the past.
For a particular age group and generation it might very well be an attempt to hold on to just a bit of the 1950’s America that may or may not have actually existed, but is remembered as an “Ozzie & Harriet or Leave it to Beaver” period of time. For others it might be anything from the 1960′s – 1970’s that is considered Vintage or Retro. This time of rapid and radical change, as people staked a new claim to their identities and attempted to forge the future, might be remembered as a wonderful “crucible” where great things were born from great upheaval. Still others may remember watching “Jem and the Holograms, Thundercats and Care Bears cartoons”, while eating a delicious bowl of Count Chocula to be their truly Vintage and Retro moment that they want own.
The generations may be different, the eras perhaps somewhat unconnected and yet the human need to possess a bit of their own personal Vintage and Retro moment remains universal.
Cameras and video technology seem to be good starting points, with regards to the measurement of “Vintage and Retro time.”
When this Vintage and Retro Keystone 8mm Movie Camera was manufactured, the engineering department focused only on the goal of making the most durable and longest lasting product possible. Planned obsolescence was never a consideration. Why would anyone plan on something wearing out and needing to be replaced? Pick up this camera and see for yourself…it’s heavy. It’s made of steel and aluminum. Maybe it has a bit of the people who assembled it contained within? The people that manufactured items such as these could be compared to steel and aluminum for their own strength and durability. Let’s face it, most of the people who manufactured these things had returned not too long before from defeating the most terrible threat to human civilization that the world has ever seen, during World War Two. We think perhaps that steel and aluminum might be a fitting attribute for them. (By the way, cigar smoking in the office was considered the norm when this camera was made…how times have changed?)
There’s probably not many who remember the awesome Citizens Band Radio craze, but to those who do, this Midland CB Radio base station is a genuine “blast from the past”. Now you see boys and girls, way back then the speed limit on the Interstate Highway System was a blazing 55 miles per hour. This was in order to save energy and reduce traffic fatalities. (We’re not really sure if it did either thing…but feel free to research this and let us know.)
So, Americans being Americans, we all bought CB radios for our cars to alert each other to the presence of radar traps and to also talk in a weird lingo for hours to each other about absolutely nothing. (Kind of like the Internet is today). Now as we’ve stated, everybody had a CB in their car, but only a few had an actual BASE STATION in their homes…so you could talk for hours to people, about absolutely nothing, using a weird lingo from the comfort of your easy chair.
How about this Complete NES Nintendo Action Set? Do any of our loyal readers remember mom yelling at you to turn that awful machine off, go out and play or at the minimum…DO YOUR HOMEWORK! This was all a clever ruse by the way. Mom wasn’t really concerned about your physical fitness or level of education…SHE JUST WANTED SOME QUIET TIME! (Sorry to burst your bubble…but then again if you’re interested in adding this wonderful item to your household, you’re probably old enough to have figured this out?)
So what’s the point of this long drawn out gpawn ramble? Well, in case you didn’t know, Glendale Pawn and Jewelry now has a VINTAGE & RETRO category on our online store. The inventory level is building as we chat and we’re pretty confident that you’ll find something there to take you back in time for a moment…and bring a smile to your face.
