In case you’re new to the area, here’s a little tidbit from Wikipedia that speaks volumes about spending a summer here in the Phoenix-Metro area:

On June 26, 1990, the temperature reached an all-time recorded high of 122 °F (50 °C)

Fun huh?

Your humble scribe gpawn remembers that day very well. One could smell antifreeze in the air from all the blown radiators and hoses. Almost half of the municipal buses laid down and said…”No mas!” Amazingly enough, Sky Harbor International Airport was also closed for quite awhile due to the heat. Too hot to fly? Well, not really, but the performance charts for the commercial aircraft only went up to 120° F  and due to legal liabilities and such, all flights were grounded. This of course gave rise to an entrepreneurial group (God bless America!) who began printing and selling t-shirts that said, “I was heated-in at Sky Harbor, June 26, 1990″ (Amazing how quickly custom t-shirts can appear during a calamity…is it not?)

While those in the Midwest or back on the East Coast have the luxury of asking each other, “Think we’ll have a hot summer this year?”…those of us who live here don’t even bother which such trivial matters. Why? Because we KNOW the answer. Yes, it will be VERY hot this summer. No doubt about it. You can take it to the proverbial bank. “Yeah, but it’s a DRY heat…” In most cases, yes it is. The oven in your kitchen also produces a dry heat…but you don’t crawl inside it do you?

Now gpawn has spent a total of 27 summers here in the “Valley of the scalded” and has a few helpful tips for those of you who may be noobs to this particular brand of climatological insanity:

First of all, get down here to Glendale Pawn and Jewelry to prepare for this summer (You knew THAT was coming did you not?) If you can’t make it down in person, shop online anytime at www.ArizonaPawnShops.com.

Here’s your survival strategy:

Okay, let’s say your air conditioner is busted, you just laid out a bunch of cash for junior’s braces and guess what? Grocery prices have gone up yet again! You need some cash my friend, to get the A/C fixed before the heat slams on. We can help. Just bring your scrap gold and used gold jewelry to us and we’ll buy it from you…fast.

Turn your gold and jewelry into cash!

OR! We will loan cash on almost anything of value (as long as we don’t have to feed it) so gather up some of the stuff that you don’t need and is just taking up space, bring it to us and turn it into cash!FAST!

We loan money on almost anything of value...as long as we don't have to feed it.

The air conditioner is now fixed, just in time before it hits 100 and “holy cow” degrees, so you’re doing pretty well! Now you’ll need to make it a habit to stay in out of the heat. You work out in the heat all day? Well, that kind of gives a new meaning to the term, “Go home and chill” doesn’t it? Happily, Glendale Pawn and Jewelry can help you with this as well…while saving you a BUNCH of money. How you ask? Check this out:

Okay, crank down the A/C and you're now officially SET until October!

Finally, NOTHING is more important than staying hydrated in the desert heat. You have to drink a LOT of water or other beverages so your complexion doesn’t start to resemble the lizard that hangs around your front porch. But seriously, you can survive quite well as long as you have water. Now having water and cold beverages is one thing…dispensing them with style and class is another. Once again, ol’ gpawn can hook you up:

You KNOW you want this...

Yes, it's a gigantic, refrigerated Rockstar beverage cooler...we can almost guarantee that you'll be the ONLY one on the block with this!

Well, maybe June will be nice to us this year and it won’t be too awful hot? I wouldn’t bet on it. At least now you have some kind of battle plan for taking on the desert and once again, we are here to help you in any way we can!

Next week we’ll talk a bit about a WORLD famous jeweler that we’re sure you’ve heard of and try to solve a mystery about their famous and iconic packaging (and the connection to Glendale Jewelry and Pawn). We’ll give you some valuable counsel on how not to mess up Father’s Day this year and we’ll also provide some commentary about various current events. In any event (Like that segue do you?) have a great weekend, be excellent to each other and we’ll be back to blogging on Monday.

As always, thanks for stopping by,

gpawn
